On Saturday 22 May, Ian Wynne  and Paul Darby Dowman raced in an exciting K2 1000m final to secure their place in the Olympic Games in Athens this summer. In a race that was lead by the Spanish, the British boys, tagged onto the Norwegian boat of Larsen and Fjeldheim,  to look good and grind out a great result that brought them the bronze medal and that precious Olympic place.

It was all smiles from Paul Darby-Dowman and a hatted Ian Wynne as the boys got out of the boat as they realised they had just taken some great scalps including

This will be Paul's 3rd Olympic Games (making his debut at the tender age of 18 in Atlanta) and Ian's second. This should give Ian great confidence going into his K1 500m final which will be held tomorrow, where he has the chance to qualify another Games slot.

Meanwhile, Tim Brabants showed his continued good form by winning a silver medal in the K1 1000m race, which was won by Norwegian Eric Larsen. Interestingly, Emanuel Silva, the winner of the Junior World Championships K1 1000m event in Japan in 2003, finished in 7th place and qualified Portugal an Olympic slot.

Final day of the 2nd round Olympic qualification and European Championships anfd Ian Wynne followed up his great bronze medal and Olympic qualification in the K2 1000m with a stunning race in the K1 500 which brought him the guarantee of another Olympic appearance and a silver  European Championship medal.

This was a great effort, in a race where Ian had not the best of starts but gradually worked his way back into contention and saw him crossing the line on the boat-tail of the Hungarian legend, Atos Verecki. To put Ian's performance into context, en route to his silver medal, he beat the Spanish racer Perez and the German athlete Altepost who won silver and bronze medals in the World Championships last year. He also added the Lituanian Duonela to his list of scalps - another 2003 WChamps finalist. This proves that Ian is truly a genuine medal contender, come 28th August at 8:30am in Schinias, Greece.

Said Eric Farrell ' Ian and Paul showed what big improvements they have made this year in the middle section of their race and I was pleased to see their continued speed through to the end of the race. This was their best K2 race so far and will give them confidence thorugh to Athens.'

Lucy Hardy finished 4th in the B final, which will give her a final European ranking of 13th. The K2 Pete Almasi/ Ross Sabberton combination has a similar result in the K2 500 event.
